The stunning beauty of the mosaic floor at the Ca’ d’Oro is a pride of Venice and the product of more recent times, about 1 century after the end of the Serenissima.

Entirely designed and even partially laid down by Ca’ d’Oro’s last owner, the baron Giorgio Franchetti, the 350 square meters floor is a unique composition of many different marbles from multiple areas:

Is this a rat carved in Venice on a bank of the Grand Canal? We bet it is.

Is that a…?
Yes, it’s the image of a “pantegana”, a big rat carved in the stone of a column on the Canal Grande.

It’s neither the result of modern vandalism, nor is it the work of a great artist of Venice. The origins are unknown, and the reason of this carving can only be guessed, so that is what the venetian did.

It was around 3:30 pm, in Rio Morto in the district of Cannaregio, when passers-by heard a woman crying and screaming. None of them stopped, thinking it was just lovers arguing, at the exception of one man, the police officer in plain clothes Elio Berdozzo, who immediately walked towards the source of the screams. After having reached the place from which the screams were coming, he first noticed a couple laying on the snow covered ground, snow which had fallen exceptionally much on Venice that day.

The man on this Venetian palace looks great but no one knows who he is.

In the Campiello Santa Maria Nova, in the district of Cannaregio, a very curious statue can be seen on the facade of the Bembo Boldù Palace. This real life size statue of a standing man covered in hairs and holding a solar disk is the object of several distincts interpretations.

San Martino, the 11th of November, is a day dear to the venetians, and especially to the youngest ones who can be found walking around the city in groups, singing, hitting pots and pans to celebrate the saint.

This important festival in Venice has a long tradition.The cult goes back to the VIII century, time when the church of Saint Martin was founded in Castello, perhaps by refugees from the city of Ravenna, known for their devotion to the saint.

In November 1719, after two very stormy days, two devastated bodies were found close to the Arsenal. The police first thought about an attack of big animals from the neighbourhood, but had to exclude the hypothesis as no evidence was found.
