      Is that a…?
      Yes, it’s the image of a “pantegana”, a big rat carved in the stone of a column on the Canal Grande.

      It’s neither the result of modern vandalism, nor is it the work of a great artist of Venice. The origins are unknown, and the reason of this carving can only be guessed, so that is what the venetian did.

      It was around 3:30 pm, in Rio Morto in the district of Cannaregio, when passers-by heard a woman crying and screaming. None of them stopped, thinking it was just lovers arguing, at the exception of one man, the police officer in plain clothes Elio Berdozzo, who immediately walked towards the source of the screams. After having reached the place from which the screams were coming, he first noticed a couple laying on the snow covered ground, snow which had fallen exceptionally much on Venice that day.
