You finally made it! You’ve been waiting years but, at last, you managed to find some time in your busy life and you booked a hotel in the heart of Venice! Venice with its canals, its boats, its bridges and little shops. Venice, the beautiful pedestrian only city… oh wait a minute!
How do you actually get to Venice???
Getting to Venice
Even though most of the visitors coming to Venice know about it, still many tourists are surprised to find out that Venice is not accessible by car. The closest available parking lot is in P.le Roma, the only part of Venice in which cars are allowed and which connects the city to the mainland through a 5km bridge called Ponte della Libertà. Due to the limitation in space, the garage in P.le Roma applies prices that are higher than those applied on the mainland around Venice.
Venice’s Train Terminal is Venezia S.Lucia and it’s always the last stop, you can’t miss it.
Do not jump off the train when you’ll read Venezia-Mestre: it’s the stop previous to the right one! If you get off there, you will still be on the mainland and will need to get on another train to reach Venice.
There are 2 airports close to the city. Venezia Marco Polo (VCE) and Treviso-Venezia (TSF):
- VCE is the closest, and from there it is possible to reach Venice in less than 20 minutes. The cheapest way to travel is by bus. Two companies cover this route: the public company ACTV and the private company ATVO. We suggest you use the latter, for it has a separate space for your luggage, air conditioning, and a seat, at the same price of ACTV which guarantees you only the ride… The cost of a one-way ticket is 8€ (August 2016). If you want to admire Venice’s beauty while navigating over its lagoon, there are 2 alternatives: public water bus service (run by ALILAGUNA) or private water taxi. The public water bus has a cost of 15€ per person, while the taxi has a fixed cost of 100€.
- TSF is connected to Venice by the private ATVO bus service, which will bring you into town in less than 50 minutes. The price for a one-way ticket is 12€ (August 2016).
