      In Venice there are exactly 391 bridges, 403 including the Giudecca, crossing 150 canals and uniting the 117/118 – no one seems to agree on this- islands the city was built on.

      In the beginning, those bridges were flat and made of wood, easy to cross for the horses pulling the carriages that could circulate in the city. Only around the XVI century, the bridges started being all built arched and most of them made of stone.
