    Burano Lace Museum

    Thanks to the work of the Adriana Marcello Foundation, in 1978, the Venice city council founded the “Consortium for Burano Lace”, to revive and re-evaluate the ancient art of the Merletto di Burano, or Burano Lace. After ordering and cataloguing historical documents and drawings, the Lace Museum was opened in the building which had been Burano Lace school from 1872 to 1970.

    Murano Glass Museum

    Originally a patrician’s palace in typical Flamboyant Gothic style, in 1659 it became the residence of Bishop Marco Giustinian who later bought and donated the property to the Torcello diocese. In 1805 the Torcello diocese was abolished, and the palace became Murano’s town hall. The museum was created in 1861 and was housed on the first floor, but the rapid growth of the collection lead the museum to occupy the whole building. Since 1923, when Murano was annexed to Venice, the museum became part of the Venice Civic Museums.

    Torcello’s bell tower

    Due to the continuous arrivals of people from Altino, fleeing the barbarian invasions, the Eastern Roman Empire ordered the construction of a cathedral in 639. This cathedral, which still exists in its original form since almost 1400 years, is one of the most ancient religious edifices in the Veneto and an example of Venetian-Byzantine architecture. Inside of the church, it is also possible to admire the most antique mosaics of all the venetian area.

    Saint Mark’s Bell Tower

    First built in the 9th century, it was used as a watch tower and lighthouse for the dock which was in the position where now is the Piazzetta.

    Since the sixteenth century, the bell tower measures 98,6m in height, making it the tallest building in Venice.

    In over a thousand years of existence, the campanile was struck by lightning several times because of its height, and it was severely damaged on 10 occasions, the last of which in 1762. Since 1772 the bell tower has a lightning conductor.

    Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
