      Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

      The Scoletta was created in 1478 by a group of wealthy Venetians, next to the church of San Rocco, to house their lay confraternity. In 1517 the board of directors of the School decided to hire the architect Pietro Bon to create a large building for the new headquarters of their rapidly growing association.

      After the works were concluded in 1560, this wealthy school decided to have their ceilings decorated by the best venetian painters. The 22nd of May 1564, the Scuola Grande announced a competition for sketching “Saint Roch in Glory” and gave one month of time for the submission.

      Madonna dell’Orto

      If you’ve been wandering around the district of Cannaregio, chances are that you saw the brickwork facade, pierced by a beautiful portal surmounted by a pointed arch ardoned with white stone decorations.
      One of these decorations represents St. Christopher, the St Patron of the travellers, for which the church was built in the mid-14th century.
      As you read though, the current popular name of the church ‘Madonna dell’Orto’ does not longer have anything to do with the Saint, but rather suggests consecration to Holy Virgin.

      San Pantalon’s Church

      Step in with us, and look up: you’ll see a gigantic oil painting on 40 canvas stiched together and covering the whole ceiling of the central nave!!! Its 443 square meters area make this the biggest painting in the world!

      This enormous piece has been painted directly on the ceiling in 24 years of work, between 1680 and 1704, by Gian Antonio Fumiani. According to a leged, the creator is said to have fallen down and have died after giving the last touch to this masterpiece… but Fiumani actually died in 1710, 6 years after finishing his work! We think this amazing piece of art doesn’t need any legends around it, it is legendary itself!

      Campo del Ghetto

      Due to war, in 1509 a great number of Jews fled to Venice. To keep an eye on these new arrivals, the Serenissima decided to confine the Jewish community to an area accessible only through 2 bridges and survelling it with guards. This are had hosted foundries that used to “gettare”, “cast” the metal, and was therefore known as Ghetto.

      Since then, “ghetto” indicates an area in which a certain community is confined.
